Antwerp Port’s cargo throughput may grow by 13%, to 178m tons this year

Freight volumes passing through the port of Antwerp (the Netherlands) is expected to increase 13% year-over-year to 178 million tons by this year-end, the Port Authority provisional data said. The throughput growth was fueled by increased containers traffic. Antwerp Port expects year-end container volume to reach 8,483,000 TEUs, or 16.1% YOY.

Ro-ro cargo handling may grow by 14.8% to 3,6 million tons. However, in comparison with 2008’s figures there is still a downturn in this cargo segment (-16.9%). The volume of bulked cargo this year also demonstrated a 6.3-percent gain to 11.1 million tons, but down 34.4% from the results of 2008.
