Import/export cargo rose 10 percent from last year to reach 6.59 million TEUs, while transhipment cargo grew 10.4 percent to 3.68 million TEUs. Coastwise cargo grew 28.6 percent to 0.23 million TEUs.
The Port of Busan – Korea's main port and the fifth busiest world in the port – saw cargo volume increase 13 percent from last year to 7.87 million TEUs, while the Gwangyang and Incheon ports saw a moderate 1.5 percent and 2.2 percent growth respectively to 1.04 million TEUs and 0.96 million TEUs.
Total cargo volume at South Korea's 31 trading ports added up to 637.4 million tonne in the first half of the year, which is the highest record to date,
The Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs said this is a 7.1 percent jump from the first half of last year (595.4 million tones) and 11.6 percent higher than 2008, on the eve of the global financial crisis.
Cargo volume rose 28.1 percent, 11.6 percent, and 10.2 percent from last year for the ports in Pyeongtaek and Dangjin, Ulsan, and Busan respectively, thanks to rising trade in anthracite coal, oil, and wood products.
The Port of Pohang, however, saw a five percent drop in cargo due to cutbacks in anthracite coal and iron ore trade.
