Cargo throughput of the port of Klaipeda (Lithuania) for 7 months of 2011 grew by 22.7% compared to the same period of last year, to 21.35 million tons, the Klaipeda Port Authority said.
In July, handling of fertilizer increased by 33.1 percent to 1 million 62,6 thousand tons, transshipment of oil products rose by 12.3 percent to 713.16 tons, Ro-Ro cargo increased by 3.9% to 23.38 thousand units. Container throughput was up 33% to 31.12 thousand TEUs. Passengers traffic fell 16.9% to 39 146. The number of passengers of cruise ships dropped by 57.3% to 3 300 people.
State-run Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. Currently, there are 17 stevedores, shipyards, other companies operating at the port and providing ranged forwarding and logistics services. In 2010, Port of Klaipeda cargo throughput increased year-over-year by 10.9%, to 31,27m tons.
