Klaipeda port cargo traffic down 6.5 percent
Cargo throughput at Klaipeda port in January-September 2012 fell year-on-year 6.5% to 31.93 million tons, the Port Authority statistics said.
The nine-month volume of liquid bulk was down 9.7% compared to the same period in 2011, to 13,532,000 tons. Shipments of suction and grab cargoes fell 5.6% to 10,207,000 tons. General cargo volume slid 1.7% to 8,185,000 tons.
In the reporting period, the port saw 5,164 calls with 280,199 passengers (+8.4%).
Handling of Ro-Ro cargoes reached 3,646,000 tons (+0.3%).
Container traffic decreased by 6% to 278,982 TEUs.
State-run Port of Klaipeda, the northernmost ice-free port on the East coast of the Baltic Sea, is the largest Lithuanian transport hub, connecting sea and inland traffic lanes. There are 17 stevedore companies, shipyards and other operators at the port, providing a broad range of services. In 2011, Port of Klaipeda cargo throughput rose 36 million tons from 31.27m tons a year before.
