Steel-cutting for 60MW icebreaker at Baltic Shipyard slated for summer 2013
Baltic Shipyard has scheduled a steel-cutting ceremony for the 60MW icebreaker ordered by Atomflot for the summer of 2013, the shipyard CEO Alexander Voznesensky said.
Alexander Voznesensky added that the shipyard is presently undergoing modernization of its facilities for the construction of nuclear icebreakers.
In June, the Russian government in its regulation initiated the construction of a multipurpose icebreaker of capacity of 60 MW (UAL-60). Atomflot and Baltic Shipyard (Baltiysky Zavod) signed a contract for the construction of the RS class icebreaker of new generation of Project 22220. The 60MW icebreaker (class: Icebreaker 8) will be able to sail in the 3-meter-thick ice. The vessel features advanced double-draft capability, which makes it suitable for operations both in the Arctic waters, and in the mouths of the northern rivers. There will be another three serial icebreakers of the RS class.
Under the turn-key contract worth RUB 36.959 billion, Baltic Shipyard is to complete the order by December 30, 2017 and dock the newbuild at the berth of FSUE Atomflot in Murmansk. Keel-laying was scheduled for November 2013, launching - for November 2015. Just two days ago, the shipyard has held a keel-laying for the 25MW diesel-powered icebreaker. The vessel’s construction will be supervised by RS.
