Russia may pull out of Kyoto Protocol
Russia may withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol, which sets targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said at a government meeting today devoted to the state environmental program for 2013-2015, RBC reports.
"We haven't received any benefits from the Kyoto Protocol and have not been able to make any commercial use of it," Medvedev said.
Unless the international community agrees on climate change, Russia will repudiate the accord, Medvedev added.
Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich said he ordered that an alternative option be examined, namely a bilateral agreement with the European Union on this issue. Given the tensions over EU's third energy package, Dvorkovich was unable to assess the likelihood of this happening.
