Hong Kong container volumes down 3.9 percent
Container traffic at the Port of Hong Kong in January-September of 2012 are expected to total 17.512 million TEUs, a 3.9-percent decline compared with the same period last year, the Hong Kong Port Development Council (PDC) Secretariat’s provisional figures said. The report was based on the data provided by major operators.
Shipments of containers through Kwai Tsing termianls climbed 1.5% to 13.193 million TEUs, container traffic at other terminals fell by 17.4% to 14.312 million TEUs.
In September, handling of containerized imports / exports dropped by 2.4% to 1.945 million TEUs. Monthly container throughput at Kwai Tsing terminals rose 7.3% to 1.465 million TEUs, with a 23.6% decline in container volume at other terminals, to 480,000 TEUs.
Port of Hong Kong is one of the busiest container ports in the world. In 2011, overall container throughput at the Port of Hong Kong totaled 24.4 million TEUs. The port is able to handle 456,000 ships a year.
