Deutsche Bahn buys Polish rail company
Deutsche Bahn has signed an agreement to acquire PCC Logistics - Poland's largest privately owned rail company - for an undisclosed purchase price.
PCC Logistics comprises several companies operating regionally and specialising primarily in the transportation of coal, chemicals and construction materials.
The acquisition has been concluded pending the agreement of the responsible authorities and antitrust agencies.
According to Hartmut Mehdorn, chairman of the DB management board, Poland is Germany's biggest trading partner in Eastern Europe, and Germany is Poland's largest export market.
Poland plays an important role in developing traffic along the trans-European rail corridors. It also has the second-largest national railroad market within the EU. Furthermore, Poland offers great potential for growth in rail-bound logistics for Polish as well as international customers.
PCC Logistics' operations are centred in Silesia, and the company operates services to all economic centres in Poland.
Norbert Bensel, member of the DB Mobility Logistics management board responsible for transportation & logistics, says the plan is to develop PCC Logistics into the central pillar for Eastern Europe within DB Schenker's European network.
DB Schenker will continue its existing cooperation with of PKP (the Polish state railways), since the partners have worked well together in the past.
