MAN presents first EGR Tier III-compliant engine
MAN Diesel & Turbo (MAN) says it has collaborated with Hyundi Heavy Industries subsidiary HHI-EMD to build the first IMO Tier III-compliant diesel engine using exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology, Ship & Bunker reports.
The engine, a new type known as a MAN B&W 6S80ME-C9 with integrated EGR, was presented at HHI-EMD production facilities in Ulsan, South Korea, and will be installed in a Maersk Line C-class container vessel to be delivered in the first quarter of 2013 for service in Southeast Asia and West Africa.
A.P. Moller – Maersk Group and MAN say they have agreed to operate the ship in IMO Tier III mode 20 percent of the time and switch to fuel-optimised Tier II mode the rest of the time.
MAN will follow the engine's performance so that it can improve its technology in the future.
The EGR system meets the Tier III nitrous oxide regulations, which will be introduced in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) starting in 2016, without significantly compromising engine performance, MAN said.
"Testing achieved a low penalty, equivalent to 1-3g/kWh, which is even better than our most optimistic expectations," said Søren H. Jensen, vice president and head of research & development, Marine Low-Speed.
MAN recently announced that Chevron Corp. ordered engines with EGR systems for two lightering newbuildings that will be delivered in 2014.
