Vehicle slump hits Melbourne port
Melbourne’s port was quieter in December after imports of foreign-made motor vehicles slumped, reported the Herald-Sun.
The number of containers moving through the Port of Melbourne fell 6.2 per cent in December, compared with the same month in 2007.
Port of Melbourne spokesman Peter Harry said that during the month the port handled about 184,000 TEUs.
He said imports of motor vehicles were down about 33 per cent.
There were also declines in a number of export items, including rice, barley, waste paper and cheese,'' he said.
I don't expect January to necessarily improve.
We're not expecting a huge bounce back in volumes, put it that way.''
