8.7% less cargo loaded in Klaipeda port in January 2009
In January 2009, 2.2 million tones of cargo was loaded in Klaipeda sea port, a decrease of 8.7% or 210,100 tones year-on-year, the Baltic Course reports.
In January 2009, the load of liquid cargo advanced 8.4%, while the load of lose and general cargo dropped 22.6% and 26.9% year-on-year.
In January this year, the number of passengers arriving to the port via ferries went down 10.5% year-on-year and totalled 12,710 people.
A total of 701,750 tones of crude oil was loaded in Butinge terminal in January this year, an increase of 37.4% year-on-year.
Klaipeda State Seaport is the northernmost ice-free port on the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea.
19 big stevedoring companies, ship - repair and ship – building yards operate within the port and all marine business and cargo handling services are being rendered. The annual port cargo handling capacity is up to 40 million tons. The port is capable of handling dry cargo carriers of up to 70,000 tonnes in deadweight and tankers of up to 100,000 tonnes in deadweight.
