Throughput of Klaipeda port down 8.7% to 2.2 mln t in Jan 09

In January 2009, the port of Klaipeda handled 2.194.6 million tonnes of cargo (-8.7%, year-on-year), the port informs. In the reported period, transshipment of general cargo fell by 26.9% to 546,800 tonnes. The port’s container throughput totaled 21,096 TEU (-27.5%), transshipment of ro-ro cargo fell by 27.2% to 11,689 units, dry loose and bulk cargo – by 12.6% to 616,000 tonnes.

In January, transshipment of liquid bulk cargo fell by 8.4%, year-on-year, to 1.031.7 million tonnes including 952,540 tonnes of oil products (-21.6%).

January throughput of Butinge terminal climbed by 37.4% to 701,750 tonnes.

Klaipeda State Seaport is the northernmost ice-free port on the Eastern coast of the Baltic Sea.

19 big stevedoring companies, ship - repair and ship – building yards operate within the port and all marine business and cargo handling services are being rendered. The annual port cargo handling capacity is up to 40 million tons. The port is capable of handling dry cargo carriers of up to 70,000 tonnes in deadweight and tankers of up to 100,000 tonnes in deadweight.
