Port Klang container handling up 8m TEUs
Port Klang handled 7.97 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers through its two ports — Westports and Northport — last year.
This accounts for a 12 per cent rise from 7.11 million TEUs in 2007 handled by the two ports, said Port Klang Authority general manager Lim Thean Shiang.
Westports’ container handling rose by 15.2 per cent to 4.97 million TEUS in 2008 from 4.31 million TEUS in 2007 while Northport’s container handling surged 7.1 per cent to 3.0 million TEUs last year from 2.81 million TEUs in the previous year.
With the increased container handling, Port Klang has inched up in its ranking to No. 15 in world ranking of container ports from 16th spot in 2007, he told a media conference.
Lim, however, said container handling in January dwindled due to lack of imports and exports due to the gloomy economy landscape.
