Indian ports set record growth in 2008
Jawaharlal Nehru Port's three terminals handled a total of nearly 4.2 million TEU during 2008 with its newest facility run by APM-Terminals-backed, Gateway Terminals India, set the record as the busiest unit with 1.52 million TEU handled.
The remaining terminals at the JNP constitute the first privately operated facility in India of DP World's Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal, which took 1.46 million TEU, and the third a government-run facility close behind in turnover with a 1.19 million TEU throughput.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust runs India's largest port complex Mumbai and this saw a healthy volume uplift of 7.5 per cent according to Paris-based AXS-Alphaliner. The second-biggest operating port of Chennai saw volume increase to 14.2 per cent to 1.2 million TEU last year, reported American Shipper.
