ELAA figures show box trade downturn
Figures produced by the European Liner Affairs Association (ELAA) show that cargo volumes for Asia/Europe dropped by 12% between October and November 2008, and that provisional year-on-year figures show an overall 15% downturn in November Published on the on the ELAA website are the liner shipping industry trade association's first set of trade statistics. As part of its new role as the industry trade association, the ELAA has a brief to compile data for the container trades serving Europe. The figures, compiled by ELAA subsidiary Container Trades Statistics, provide data on volumes not only for Asia / Europe but also for other European trades such as Transatlantic and the India Sub Continent. Figures for December are due for publication next week.
“We have now completed the first two months of the collation of the headline data from the lines input – the level of data input from the lines has been far better than we originally thought,” said Rod Riseborough, CEO of Container Trades Statistics.
He went on to say that, “Most lines have submitted their 2008 data for the majority of the Trades, so we hope to be able to publish comparative figures for 2008 and 2009 starting in March 2009.”
“Having seen some of the test results of the new ELAA data, I am pleased by the quality and quantity of the information generated. Such information will be a benefit both to ELAA members and others in the shipping community,” said Chris Bourne, Executive Director, ELAA.
