Yangtze river cargo volume breaks world record

The cargo volume of China’s longest river, the Yangtze, cracked 1.8bn tons in 2012, creating a new world record for the sixth year in a row, in a further sign of the increasing shift of manufacturing away from the coast to inland areas, SinoShipNews reports.

Currently, there are 4,114 productive berths along the ports of Yangtze river, including 421 10,000dwt-class berths and ten 100,000dwt-class berths. Last year, the Yangtze River Shipping Authority invested RMB2.81bn to accelerate channel construction of the river and the development of new larger and more efficient ships.
