Road tunnel built for Sochi Olympics collapses
A vehicular road traffic tunnel being constructed for Sochi 2014 Olympics collapsed on Sunday, March 3, REGNUM reports.
The landslide has occurred in the newly built tunnel of the Kurortny Avenue substitute road in the neighborhood of Mamayka.
The incident is believed to be a result of loss of stability of the surface soil and the destruction of the retaining wall, attributed to water influx and insufficient landslide mitigation work, a local road building and maintenance company said.
Overall, about 7,062 cubic feet (200 m2) collapsed in the tunnel. A three-storey apartment building under construction on the surface was also partly damaged, the news agency reports.
There were no casualties or equipment damages reported.
