With the new draft SCCT is turning into the sole container terminal in Egypt and the East Med capable of receiving the latest generation of vessels.
In 2008 SCCT was handling nearly 20 percent of the East Mediterranean transshipment market and currently has capacity for increasing this share even further.
Even though trade volumes are slumping at the moment, SCCT is investing in Phase 2, which would bring the total area of the container terminal to 29.65 acres, with a total quay length of 7,874 feet by the second quarter of 2010.
The number of quay cranes will rise to 24, which would be the highest number of cranes in the Eastern Mediterranean.
