Big Port of St. Petersburg cuts throughput by 27% to 9.7 mln t in Q1 09

In the first quarter of 2009, Big Port of St. Petersburg handled 9.676 million tonnes of cargo (-27%, year-on-year), the Port’s Administration states.

Turnover of dry bulk fell by 38% to 1.334 million tonnes, dry loose cargo – by 54% to 43,200 tonnes. Transshipment of general cargo fell by 23% to 2.514 million tonnes while turnover of ferrous metal increased by 41%, non-ferrous metal – by 8%. Turnover of scrap metal fell by 88%.

In the reported period transshipment of oil cargo fell by 1%, year-on-year.

In January-March 2009 turnover of vessels in the port of St. Petersburg amounted to 1,598 units (805 in and 793 out)

In 2008, Big Port of St. Petersburg handled 59.9 million tonnes of cargo with turnover of vessels amounting to 29,647 units. Over 20 stevedoring companies work in the port of St. Petersburg.
