The Government of Ukraine adopted an important document defining the ways of development of the national shipbuilding industry – the Strategy of Shipbuilding Development to 2020. Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko signed a decree about it on May 6.
The target of the document is “to create a modern competitive national shipbuilding industry”. According to the Strategy, the major ways to overcome the crisis are state stimulation of the sector, search for strategic investors; structural reforms to optimize the potential of the sector (including creation of scientific and producing sectoral unions). The programme will be financed from the state budget, by shipbuilding enterprises and investors.
According to the Ukrainian State Statistics Service, in Q1 of 2009, the production volume in the shipbuilding sector fell by 59% year-on-year.
