Throughput of Liepaja port down 14% to 1.3 mln t in Jan-Apr 09

In January-April 2009, the port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 1.324 million tonnes of cargo (-14.1%, year-on-year) with dry loose cargo accounting for 47%, general cargo - 41% and liquid bulk cargo - 12%, The Baltic Course reports.

In April, the port of Liepaja handled 347,575 tonnes of cargo (-10.8%m year-on-year) including 104,707 tonnes of cargo handled by TransWide service.

In April the port handled 155,000 tonnes of dry loose cargo including 145,000 tonnes of grain. Transshipment of liquid bulk cargo totaled 59,900 tonnes (+67.3% against March) including 35,600 tonnes of oil products.

In April the port handled 120 vessels and serviced 1,185 passengers.

The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries mainly Byelorussia. In 2008, the port of Liepaja handled 4.19 million tonnes of cargo.
