Port of Riga, the largest in Latvia by the turnover of goods, is planning to handle more than 30 million tons of cargoes, which is by 1.5 % more than in 2008, the Port of Riga Managing Director, Leonid Loginovs, the BNS agency informs according to RZD-Partner.
He mentioned that the economic crisis has not yet affected the Port of Riga: volume of transshipped mineral oil, coal and mineral fertilizers only increases.
L.Loginovs added that this year the port handles containers with the humanitarian aid which is going from the USA to Afghanistan. Due to this, the port expects to increase container cargoes transshipment volume in future too.
In the first quarter of 2009 the Port of Riga handled 7.455 million tons of cargoes, which is by 6.5 % more than for the similar period of 2008. Total last year the Port of Riga transshipped 29.566 million tons of cargoes, by 14 % more than in 2007.
