Cargo handling by the enterprises of the private port sector of the Ukraine (including private and industrial moorings, fish ports, and the non specialized enterprises of the sea industry complex) was 11.75 million tons in the 1st quarter (+35 % on the similar period of 2008). Thus the increase was more than 3 million tons.
By comparison: state ports of the Ukraine showed a recession of 17 % for the same period, having lost more than 5.3 million tons of cargo.
International transshipment, which is of strategic importance for the non-state sector, has grown by 48 %, exceeding 19 million tons. Growth was mainly in exports, which increased by 34 % to 5.9 million tons. Growth in transits was minimal (+1.8 %, up to 4,5 million tons), which nevertheless can be considered a positive result against a background of a 20% fall in transit transshipments through state ports.
Imports fell by 24 % to 1.29 million tons. This tendency, in spite of everything, is also safer than that of ports in the national sector, which lost about 70 % of imported freight traffic in the 1st quarter.
