The port handled 1.86 million TEUs in the first quarter, 24.3 percent less than in the corresponding period last year. The drop in throughput has serious implications for Hamburg as it is the main European port for transhipment of China goods.
Regarding total cargo volumes, the port handled 27.32 million tonnes, a decline of 21.7 percent in comparison with the same period the previous year. Imports were down 22.6 percent to 15.75 million tonnes and exports down 20.4 percent to 11.57 million tonnes. General cargo was worse hit by the downturn than bulk goods at 18.45 million tonnes (-26.2 percent) and 8.87 million tonnes (-10.3 percent) repectively.
