RF Transport Ministry does not think it reasonable to ban import of containers by motor transport

RF Transport Ministry does not think it reasonable to ban import of 20’ and other containers by motor transport via international automobile entry points (AEP), PortNews IAA learnt from the Ministry’s press center. According to the source, the Ministry has considered the revised draft government decree on establishment of RF border entry points for arrival of goods in the customs territory of the Russian Federation in multipurpose and specialized containers from 20 feet and more.

“The above draft decree was aimed at the decrease of load on AEP and the queues of motor transport. However, export and import traffic fell amid the global financial crisis which resulted in absence of motor transport queues at the border. For example, in the North-West region of Russia some 90% of cargo is carried by specialized vehicles: low-level container chassis, timber carriers and car carriers. It is also necessary to note that the majority of transport operators in the region specialize in international automobile transportation between Russia and Finland (their share exceeds 80% of total transportation volume,” the Ministry states.

The Ministry says the ban and transfer of the volumes on maritime and railway entry points will result in laying up of considerable number of container carriers, aggravation of a difficult situation at the market of international automobile transportation, large-scale loss of work places in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vyborg and other cities.
