Bulgaria's Svishtov port expands freight terminal

The freight complex in Svishtov port has been upgraded with new storage facilities designed to accommodate large containers and new processing units. The overhaul has now been completed and the new compound will be operational on Monday, May 25, investor.bg has reported.
A new railway line is also currently under construction designed serve the east zone of the port. So far, that rail project has absorbed an investment of more than five million leva.
The new terminal centre on the Danube river is strategic because it is the closest docking and distribution area for cargo destined for Sofia, Plovdiv and Stara Zagora as well as most of central and northern Bulgaria. Consequently, that makes the container service and distribution service in Svishtov the cheapest in Bulgaria, reaching most of the country.
Svishtov port, which serves most of northern, central and even southern Bulgaria, is likely to expand its operational capacity in the future, as interest emanating from Macedonia and Kosovo has increased substantially, the report says.
Both countries have used the Thessaloníki port until now, but they have reportedly faced growing obstacles and so they're seeking a cheaper and more reliable alternative.
