Hanjin Shipping opens triple-berth container terminal in Busan

South Korea's Hanjin Shipping has opened its Busan New Port Phase 2-1 Terminal with its three berths running a full kilometre-and 18 metres along side and able to dock three 12,000-TEU ships simultaneously.
In cooperation with the shipping company's logistics IT specialist, Cyberlogitec, Busan New Port Phase 2-1 Terminal introduced the "world's first automated horizontal yard crane system, which made it possible to operate 200 vessels carrying 200,000 TEU for the last three months since the first voyage of Hanjin Los Angeles on February 6," a Hanjin statement said.
Hanjin Shipping's Phase 2-1 Terminal handles 18 weekly services including 14 run by the CKYH shipping alliance that unites Coscon, "K" Line, Yang Ming and Hanjin as well as four feeder services by STX Pan Ocean, KMTC and Heung-A Shipping.
According to Hanjin Shipping's subsidiary, Hanjin New Port Company, which operates the terminal and will soon run the Hanjin-Kerry Logistics Centre and the Busan Gamcheon Bulk Terminal, the unit's goal is to attract 1.6 million TEU by 2010 and two million TEU by 2011.
Said Hanjin Shipping chairwoman Eun Young Choi: "I hope Hanjin Shipping's Phase 2-1 Terminal will contribute to promoting Busan New Port to a state-of-the-art hub port of Far East Asia."
