Newcastle Port Corporation said that the volume exported in the week ended 7 AM local time recently increased to 1.5854 million tonnes from 1.5303 million tonnes a week earlier. Thirty-five ships, waiting to load 2.8 million tons of coal, were outside the harbor, up from 28 seven days earlier.
It said that coal ships queued for an average 9.8 days to load, down from 12.8 days a week earlier. The waiting time compared with 0.4 days for general cargo vessels.
Newcastle Port said that 19 vessels carrying coal sailed in the week end May 23. 10 ships were bound for Japan, 3 for China, 2 for Taiwan and 1 each for South Korea, Mexico, Thailand and Hong Kong.
Newcastle Port recently resumed normal ship movements after disruptions caused by storms that killed 2 people and forced the evacuation of 16,000 residents along Australia’s east coast.
According to the globalCOAL NEWC index, the weekly price index for power station coal shipped from Newcastle gained 2.4% to USD 64.82 tonnes.
Rio Tinto Group, Xstrata Plc and BHP Billiton Limited are among mining companies that ship coal through Newcastle.
