Breakbulk carriers form association

Breakbulk carriers have established the International Council of Heavy Lift and Project Cargo Carriers to discuss industry issues related to education, technical innovation, security and other non-rate issues.
The agreement, to be known as the Heavy Lift Club, has asked the Federal Maritime Commission for approval of the agreement, under which they would not be authorized to discuss rates.
Jan Steffens, CEO and managing director of Rickmers Linie, will serve as the group's first chairman. "The work of heavy lift and project cargo carriers is not only important, it is specialized," he said. "There are technical, operational and safety considerations in the heavy lift and project cargo sector and important challenges, which are not always considered or understood. The Heavy Lift Club provides a forum for exchanging ideas on industry matters."
Initial members will be Australia Asia Line, BigLift Shipping, Beluga Chartering, BBC Chartering & Logistic, Chipolbrok, Clippper Projects, Conti-Lines, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Intermarine, K/S Combi Lift, Nordana, Rickmers, Scan-Scott, Scan-Trans and Universal Africa Lines.
