Deepening of water area in Liepaja port is to start in August-September 2009. It will make it possible to at least double the cargo flow. According to Guntars Krievins, General Manager of the Liepaja SEZ, 18 companies (from Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark) applied for technical information necessary for participation in the competition. The deadline for applications is June 9, Delfi informs.
The work is to be completed by July 31, 2012.
According to the plan, the port’s fairways are to be deepened to 12.5 m, water area – to 12 m. Total value of the project – LTL 22.7 mln (74.5% - from EU cohesion fund, 19.6% - from state budget, 5.6% - from the budget of Liepaja SEZ.
The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. The port’s infrastructure enables it to accept vessels with maximal draft of up to 9.5 m and length of up to 225 m. There are 16 terminals in the port. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries mainly Byelorussia. In 2008, the port of Liepaja handled 4.19 million tonnes of cargo.
