In January-October 2013, the port of Liepaja (Latvia) handled 3,965,000 t of cargo (-34.1%, year-on-year), IAA PortNews learnt from the port administration. In the accounting period, grain transshipment dropped by 36.5% to 1,459,500 t, timber materials – by 32.5% to 455,600 t, construction materials – by 18% to 372,800 t.
Transshipment of ferrous metal fell by 56.3% to 182,400 t (the last month saw no changes), non-ferrous metals – by 61.4% to 97,900 t, metal scrap – by 88.3% to 59,800 t (the last month saw no changes), coal – by 69.6% to 67,400 t, while transshipment of timber pellets climbed by 17.1% to 139,700 t.
The port’s container throughput increased by 10% to 3,790 TEUs, Transshipment of ro-ro cargo – by 8% to 26,985. The number of calls dropped by 28% to 1,082 vessels.
The port of Liepaja is the third busiest port of Latvia. Half of its turnover is formed by oil products and dry loose cargo from CIS countries, mainly Belorus. In 2012, the port of Liepaja handled 7.43 mln tonnes of cargo.
