Yantar shipyard lays down Admiral Istomin frigate for RF Navy (photo)
On November 15, 2013, Baltic Shipbuilding Plant “Yantar” (United Shipbuilding Corporation, Kaliningrad) laid down the fifth frigate in the series of ships being built for RF Navy, IAA PortNews learnt from the shipyard. The frigate was named after Admiral Istomin.
Under two contracts signed with the Defence Ministry of the Russian Federation, Yantar shipyard will build six patrol ships (frigates) of project 11356 developed by Severnoye Design Bureau OJSC.
Patrol ship of project 11356 is intended for operations against surface ships and submarines of enemy in ocean and sea areas, repulsion of air attacks independently or as a part of ship formation
The lead vessel of the series, the Admiral Grigorovich, was laid down on December 18, 2010. The Admiral Essen – on July 8, 2011, the Admiral Makarov – on February 29, 2012, the Admiral Butakov – on July 12, 2013. The lead vessel is to be launched in early 2014. The completion of the series is expected in 2016.
Kaliningrad-based Baltic Shipbuilding Plant “Yantar” (Amber) was founded on July 8, 1945 on the basis of a Koenigsberg unit of German’s Schichau Werft. Yantar Shipyard specializes in building and repairs of warships and civil boats. Throughout the years the Shipyard has built 154 warships and more than 500 merchant vessels. The Russian Government holds the majority stake in the shipbuilding firm through Western Center of Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of the state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation.
