Return of Tall Ship Mir celebrated in Saint-Petersburg (photo report)
The celebration dedicated to the return of the training tall ship Mir was held in Saint-Petersburg, at Marine Club Port Arthur, IAA PortNews journalist reports. During her voyage, the Mir visited 18 foreign ports in 11 countries: Germany, Norway, France, Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Latvia, Poland, Belgium, Spain, Italy.
In 2013, the Mir participated in two races arranged by Sail Training International: The Tall Ships’ Races 2013 (in the Baltic Sea) and Mediterranean Tall Ships Regatta 2013 (the Mir was the third in that race).
The tall ship Mir was built in 1987. It is a sailing school for the cadets of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping as well as other educational institutions of Russia and foreign countries.
The celebration started with the greetings of Sergey Baryshnukov, Rector of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping and Andrey Orlov, Captain of the Mir.
The core of the celebration was the Presentation of SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2014 organized by Sail Training International and Sochi Sea Club with the support of Sovcomflot (SCF). SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2014 is a unique maritime event set to take place on the Black Sea in Spring 2014, first time under the Russian flag. It will host sailing ships of all descriptions, including famous Russian Tall Ships: Mir, Kruzenshtern, Sedov and Nadezhda. The Regatta will cross the Black Sea twice and ancor in four ports: Varna, Novorossiysk, Sochi and Constanta. The main goal of the Regatta is to open the Southern sea gates of Russia, promotion of marine tourism and yachting on the Black Sea, strengthening of good neighborly relations between countries, development of infrastructure and popularization of marine professions among young people.
Besides, the guests of the party were introduced into the history of the Mir and the plans for 2014 which will include the participation in Winter Olympics, Sochi 2014, as well as plenty of other events.
