Russia elected as Category A member of IMO Council
Russian Federation has been elected into the Council of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) as a Category A member, IAA PortNews learnt from Vitaly Klyuev, Deputy Director of the Department of State Policy for Maritime and River Transport of RF Transportation Ministry, upon completion of the voting at the 28th session of IMO Assembly.
The Organization consists of an Assembly, a Council and Committees. The Council structure is based on the principle of balance between ship owning and cargo owning states. Category A includes states with the largest interest in providing international shipping services.
Russia has for many years been IMO Council member.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations. The IMO's primary purpose is to develop and maintain a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping and its remit today includes safety, environmental concerns, legal matters, technical co-operation, maritime security and the efficiency of shipping.
