Amsterdam port tariffs to rise by 1% in 2014

Port tariffs will increase by 1% in 2014 compared to 2013. Port of Amsterdam has made this decision after conducting a thorough market consultation with the port business community under the leadership of ORAM. According to Port of Amsterdam, ORAM was involved in the process of determining the tariffs in its role as port business association. Agreements have been made regarding indexing, the tariff for transhipment between tankers and the frequency discount for liner services.

The new tariffs have been determined by calculating in the 2.3% index discount in 2013 at only 1% for 2014. Port of Amsterdam will provide once-only compensation of 2% for the indexing of the tariffs for 2014, which means the tariffs will rise on balance by 1%.

The transhipment tariff for transhipment between tankers will also be abolished. The frequency discount for liner services has been expanded to include two additional graduated scales, which makes it more attractive for shipping companies to have more ships call at Amsterdam.

The limited rise in the Port of Amsterdam tariffs is in line with the port tariffs calculated in the surrounding ports in North-Western Europe. In addition to ground lease income, port tariffs are one of the sources of income for the Port of Amsterdam. The Port of Amsterdam became a corporation on 1 April 2013 and as such determines the amount of the tariffs itself. Port of Amsterdam consults with ORAM and the port business community concerning the amount of the tariffs.

Port of Amsterdam is Western Europe’s fourth largest port and plays a large role in the transhipment and processing of energy products.
