Russia may utilize Kerch based Zaliv Shipyard for building Arctic tankers
Kerch, Crimea based Zaliv Shipyard is the only yard capable in Russia of building Arctic ships of large displacement, a spokesman for the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) said commenting the statement of Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, RIA Novosti reports.
Earlier Dmitry Rogozin has said that Crimean shipyards will participate in the construction of vessels to develop the Russian Arctic shelf. Today the orders for the class vessels are being executed by shipyards based in St. Petersburg and in the Far East.
Arctic exploration is one of the main directions of Russia's policy in recent years.
"Crimea has the only Russian shipyard with a 300-meter long, 50-meter wide slipway. Such a slipway allows building supertankers and LNG carriers of deadweight exceeding 150,000 tonnes," RIA Novosti quoted USC' Alexey Kravchenko as saying.
The USC spokesman explained that the use of smaller tonnage tankers for oil and gas transport significantly increases the cost of the commodities and reduces the competitiveness of Russian carriers in the Arctic.
Kravchenko added that the production capacities of Feodosia based “MORE” ("Sea") yards, specializing in the construction of the hydrofoils, ACVs might also be utilized in the Russian shipbuilding cooperation.
