Forecast: Annual traffic volume along the Northern Sea Route may hit 65million tonnes by 2020-2022
According to optimistic forecast transit freight traffic on the Northern Sea Route may reach 65 million tonnes a year by the 2020-2022 year, Deputy Transport Minister Victor Olersky said Thursday.
Speaking at the annual international conference "Transport and Logistics in the Arctic-2015" the official said that more than half of this volume will be generated by freight flows shipped through the port of Sabetta. The remaining traffic volume will be from offshore projects in the Barents and Kara Seas. A notable growth in transit traffic along the NSR is expected until 2030.
Victor Olesky identified among the priorities the availability of navigational and hydrographic information on the Northern Sea Route, emergency and rescue support, hydrometeorological support, construction of new icebreakers and development of the Arctic port infrastructure.
