Tall ship Mir to leave Saint-Petersburg for yet another voyage on April 28 (photo)

On April 28, 2015, the tall ship Mir of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping will leave Saint-Petersburg for her new voyage. According to IAA PortNews journalist, this has been announced today, April 10, by Sergei Baryshnikov, Rector of the University, at the meeting of the Maritime Heritage Committee of RF Government’s Marine Board.

Sergei Baryshnikov told that the sailing practice is arranged for the cadets of Makarov University, students of Moscow State Academy of Water Transport, Volga State University of Water Transport, Nakhimov Naval College and other institutions.

On May 9 the tall ship will call at port Hamburg where the cadets and the crew will celebrate the Victory Day. Then the Mir will leave for Aberdeen (Schotland) to meet with the veterans of Polar convoys,” the Rector told.

Then the tall ship will follow the route of the first Polar convoy which passed from Aberdeen to Arkhangelsk with the call at port Murmansk. On June 13, the Mir is to come to Arkhangelsk where she will take part in the honouring of Polar convoys veterans.

Rosmorport operates the ship on the basis of economic control rights. On September 17, 2014, the ship was included into the asset list of its North West Basin Branch.

The tall ship Mir was built in 1987 in Gdansk (Poland). It is a sailing school for the cadets of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping as well as other educational institutions of Russia and foreign countries. The ship is a winner of several international regattas.

Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping was set up through reorganization of two large industry-focused higher educational institutions - St.-Petersburg State University of Waterway Communications (SPSUWC) and Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy (SMA) in the form of affiliation of the Academy to the University.
