Georgian Railways has joined the Viking project, Lithuania’s Ministry of Transport and Communications says. The news was confirmed today at a meeting of members of the international intermodal freight logistics project Viking held in Vilnius. During the meeting, the possibilities for companies GEFCO Turkey and Steveco of becoming freight operators in Turkey and Finland were also discussed. The companies would take care of freight attraction to the container train Viking in the latter countries.
“Throughout its 12 years of operations, Viking has become well known and successful, while the volume of transported freight increased more than 100 times. Continuous growth of transportation and joining of new members highlights that the project further strengthens its market position. Currently, one of the key tasks of Viking is to become the main freight artery between Turkey and Scandinavia,” said Vice-Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania Saulius Girdauskas.
In 2014, train Viking carried 41185 TEU containers, that is almost 8 percent more than in 2013. In January this year, 3451 TEU containers were carried by the train, that is almost 22 percent more that in the same period last year.
The Viking train is a joint Lithuanian, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Romanian and now Georgian railways project, connecting the Baltic Sea and Black Sea. Container train Viking carries universal and specialized containers.
