Tall ship Mir leaves Saint-Petersburg for her new voyage (photo)

Tall ship Mir has left Saint-Petersburg today, April 28, for her new voyage, press center of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping told IAA PortNews.

The Mir is to return to Saint-Petersburg on September 28, 2015.

The ship will call at over 15 ports and will take part in large-scale maritime festivals like Hanse Sail 2015 (Germany), Sail Bremerhaven 2015 (Germany), Sail Amsterdam 2015 (the Netherlands). Traditionally, the Mir will participate in the international regatta Tall Ships Races 2015.

Within the framework of this voyage the ship will also take part in events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. On May 9 the tall ship will call at port Hamburg where the cadets and the crew will celebrate the Victory Day. Then the Mir will leave for Aberdeen (Schotland) to meet with the veterans of Polar convoys.

Then the tall ship will follow the route of the first Polar convoy from Aberdeen to Murmansk and Arkhangelsk where she will take part in the honouring of Polar convoys veterans.  The Mir will also call at Solovetsky Islands.         

The sailing practice has been arranged for the cadets of Makarov University, students of other Russian and foreign naval institutions and members of young seamen's clubs.     
        
From 2011, the tall ship Mir has been participating in the joint programme of Admiral Makarov University and the State Russian Museum known as “The Russian Museum: The Virtual Branch” and aimed at availability of the Museum’s collection to vast audience outside Saint-Petersburg.

Rosmorport operates the ship on the basis of economic control rights. On September 17, 2014, the ship was included into the asset list of its North West Basin Branch. The ship underwent big repair in winter 2014-2015.

The tall ship Mir was built in 1987 in Gdansk (Poland). It is a sailing school for the cadets of Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping as well as other educational institutions of Russia and foreign countries. The ship is a winner of several international regattas.

Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping was set up through reorganization of two large industry-focused higher educational institutions - St.-Petersburg State University of Waterway Communications (SPSUWC) and Admiral Makarov State Maritime Academy (SMA) in the form of affiliation of the Academy to the University.
