Robert Goodwill appointed as new UK shipping minister

Robert Goodwill, MP for Scarborough and Whitby, has been named as new Shipping Minister of UK. Mr Goodwill was appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport on Tuesday, but his specific duties within the department have been announced on May 12, the UK Chamber of Shipping reports.

As Shipping Minister, he will have responsibility for completing the Maritime Growth Study.

Robert Goodwill is a member of the Cornerstone Group, which seeks to restore Conservatism founded on traditional Conservative principles.

He was elected to Parliament in 2005 and joined the Transport Select Committee.

As part of the reshuffle that followed Gordon Brown becoming Prime Minister, he was made a Shadow Transport Minister before returning to the whip's office as an Assistant Government Whip following the formation of the coalition Government in May 2010. Mr Goodwill was later promoted to Government Whip in David Cameron's Government.

In the October 2013 reshuffle, Mr Goodwill was promoted to Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Transport.

Currently, he is a member of the all-party groups on Agriculture and Food for Development, Beer and Youth Hostelling. He lists his political interests as the Environment, Energy and the Former Soviet Republics.
