Six-month cargo throughput of Gdansk port rises 11.8% to 17.2 million tonnes
Poland based Port of Gdansk in January-June 2015 handled 17,197,374 tonnes or an 11.8-percent gain from H1 2014, the Port of Gdansk Authority said.
In the reporting period shipments of grain fell 4.9% to 779,340 tonnes, volume of general cargo and timber was down 2% to 5,519,766 tonnes, while other bulk cargo (units, sulfur, ore) grew by 3.5 % to 1,710,558 tonnes, handling of coal increased by 12.4% to 1,919,081 tonnes, liquid bulk volume soared by 30.4% from a year earlier to 7,268,629 tonnes.
The port of Gdansk is a major international transportation hub situated in the central part of the southern Baltic coast. Besides handling bulk cargoes (oil, coal, metal ores) the port provides a number of line services linking it with the ports of the Baltic Sea and Western Europe (primarily ferry, construction and ro-ro lines). In 2014, the port handled 32,277,558 t of cargo.
