Murmansk Region gains significance in production of hydrocarbons on the Arctic shelf, Marina Kovtun says (photo)
The role and significance of the Arctic is growing steadily and the state attention to subarctic territories is increasing, Murmansk Region Governor Marina Kovtun said yesterday, August 16, during the ceremonial welcoming of the North Pole-2015 station’s crew. According to the press center of the regional government, she emphasized that the role of the Murmansk Region in production of hydrocarbons on the Arctic shelf is also growing.
“The Kola Bay is probably an ideal base for large companies’ vessels. The Murmansk Region should and will meet the tasks set forth by the state for all the participants of the Arctic zone development” Marina Kovtun said.
The ceremony was also attended by Minister of Natural Resources Sergey Donskoy and Presidential Aide on Arctic and Antarctic affairs Artur Chilingarov.
The Russian research Arctic drifting station North Pole 2015 started operations on April 18. The main objective of this international project was investigation of the occurrence of changes in the Arctic, associated with global warming.
