The interservice exercise of the Northern Fleet forces started in the Arctic at the Taimyr Peninsula, says press center of Russia’s Defence Ministry.
According to the Northern Fleet Commander Admiral Vladimir Korolev, this exercise is directed to strengthening security of the Russian Arctic, providing free economic activity of the country and protection of its territory against potential military threats.
Admiral Vladimir Korolev also stressed that the scheduled exercise was absolutely defensive and was not aimed against any countries.
Actions of the interservice group concerning protection and defence of the important industrial facility in the Arctic are the main issues of the exercise.
The main feature of the exercise is that the involved units are operating in the Arctic at unfamiliar terrain and under the only command.
In the course of the event, the servicemen are to improve cooperation between military units and formations of different arms and services of the Russian Armed Forces. The exercise leadership will also assess readiness of the personnel and hardware to operate in the unfamiliar terrain of the Arctic zone.
In total, more than 1,000 servicemen, 14 aircraft, 34 pieces of special and military hardware are involved in the event.
