Hyundai Merchant Marine opened a container terminal ‘RWG (Rotterdam World Gateway)’ at the Port of Rotterdam, the biggest port in Europe, the company said in its press release. On September 11, the official opening ceremony of RWG was held at Maasvlakte 2, Rotterdam Port. At the official opening of the highly innovative and automated container terminal, around 400 officials including the Chief Operating Officer of HMM Ha Cheong-hee, the Managing Director of RWG Ronald Lugthart, the Mayor of Rotterdam Ahmed Aboutaleb, and the CEO of the port of Rotterdam Authority Allard Castelein were participated. RWG is an international consortium made up of DP World and four international shipping lines, South Korea’s Hyundai Merchant Marine, Singapore’s APL, Mitsui OSK Lines of Japan and CMA CGM of France, and cost a billion dollars to develop. HMM has 20 percent of the share and DP World takes its operation. RWG’s terminal is able to handle the largest vessels afloat in the most efficient and reliable way due to its innovative character. With dedicated handling facilities for barge, rail and road and extensive automation on site, RWG looks very different to a traditional marine terminal. The high level of automation at the terminal brings benefits for RWG when it comes to safety and sustainability. These are two areas in which RWG is leading the way. Innovative concepts result in shorter distances for internal transport and less equipment on the terminal. With fully electric cranes which are powered by 100% green energy RWG is setting new standards in the industry.
