Felixstowe creates environmental corridor

The UK’s Port of Felixstowe is to create an “environmental corridor” to improve habitats and enhance green areas as part of the Go Green campaign launched by several major port operators earlier this month.
Under the campaign, the port will refurbish part of a system of dykes within the port and improve habitats for wildlife. In addition, Felixstowe will enhance green areas within a busy industrial complex by planting a mixture of trees, grasses and wild flowers.
“The Port of Felixstowe has a long history of environmental achievements dating back to the creation of the Trimley Marsh Nature Reserve in the 1980s,” said Clemence Cheng, CEO of the Port of Felixstowe and managing director of Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) Europe division.
“Our participation in the Go Green initiative is the latest example of a commitment to the environment which, in the last few years, has seen the installation of over 2,000 solar panels at the port and investments in cleaner, more energy efficient plant. This has resulted in a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions over the period,” he added.
The Go Green project was launched by HPH in conjunction with DP World, APM Terminals, PSA International and Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) – five of the world’s largest port operators. They have been joined by the Port of Rotterdam Authority in the first ever joint industry initiative of this magnitude to promote environmental awareness and make a sustainable difference in the communities in which they operate.
