To ensure compliance with Polar Code, Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) has developed guidelines to calculate safe motion regimes for vessels operating in ice covered waters, Maksim Boyko, head of RS Research Department, told IAA PortNews at NEVA 2015, the International Maritime Exhibition and Conferences of Russia.
“These methods let calculate allowable speed for a vessel operating in broken ice, minimum safe distance for escort operations. These are crucial parameters for vessels’ safe operation in ice covered waters,” Maksim Boyko explained.
According to him, the document elaborated by RS allows captains make more reasonable decisions.
The guidelines are also applicable for designing of vessels intended for operation in ice covered waters and for calculation of voyage parameters, the expert said.
The do officially published at the official website of Russian Maritime Register of Shipping has already received a favourable review of scientific and educational organizations.
In May 2015, the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 68) adopted the environmental part of the Polar Code. Internationally binding regulations on navigation in polar waters become effective from 1 January 2017.
