Luka Koper will acquire 11 new higher capacity cranes for container handling, including seven new electric rubber tyred gantry cranes (E-RTG), the company said in its press release.
They will be part of the extension of Pier 1 and the construction of additional capacities at the container terminal which is hoping to reach a total of 1.3m teus per year by 2020.
The E-RTG cranes will operate on the storage facilities of the container terminal. They will use the electrical power from the grid which will significantly reduce the environmental impact in terms of gas emissions and noise.
Two super post-panamax container cranes will also be acquired to handle up to 14,000 teu container vessels. The two new cranes will allow for 24 containers wide and 11 high, they will start operating in June 2017.
In addition to this, there is also an order placed for two rail mounted gantry cranes (RMG) for container loading and unloading to wagons.
The cargo throughput at the Container Terminal is increasing from year to year, within the first nine months of 2015 Luka Koper handled 590,270 teus – a 16% increase from last year.
Over the next five years, Luka Koper’s investment in the container terminal will amount to €235m in order to preserve the primacy of the largest container terminal in the Adriatic in terms of container throughput per year.
