PPA reports Pilbara ports cargo volume growth in November

Pilbara Ports Authority (PPA) has delivered a total monthly throughput of 52.6 million tonnes (Mt) for the month of November. This is an increase of 7% from the same month in 2014, the PPA press release said.

The Port of Port Hedland achieved a monthly throughput of 37.9Mt, an increase of 9% from the same month in 2014. Iron ore exports for the month totalled 37.3Mt, an increase of 8% from the same month in 2014. Imports totalled 130,000 tonnes, a decrease of 81,000 tonnes or 38% from the previous year. The Port of Dampier delivered a total monthly throughput of 14.7Mt, an increase of 3% from the same month in 2014. Imports totalled 143,000 tonnes, an increase of 36,000 tonnes or 34% from the same month in 2014.

PPA operates as a Western Australian Government Trading Enterprise, and is governed under the Port Authorities Act 1999 WA (the Act). PPA was established on 1 July 2014 as a result of the Ports Legislation Amendment Act 2014 consolidating seven of WA’s eight port authorities into four new regional port authorities. The former port authorities of Dampier and Port Hedland successfully amalgamated and formed PPA. PPA encompasses the Port of Ashburton, the Port of Dampier and the Port of Port Hedland, and future ports of Anketell, Balla Balla and Cape Preston East. PPA will also assume oversight of a number of Shipping and Pilotage Act 1967 (SPA) ports, including the ports of Port Walcott, Cape Preston, Barrow Island, Varanus Island and Onslow from 2016.
