The authorities of Big Port St. Petersburg plan to join to the European system of sulfur limit control in marine fuels (called "THESIS-S”), PortNews regional correspondent reports citing Big Port St. Pb Harbourmaster Alexander Volkov.
Captain Alexander Volkov speaking at the 9th Russian Forum “Current State and Prospects for Development of Russian Bunker Services Market” said that the remote sensing system in ECA receives data from sensors located in the Danish straits (the Baltic Straits), capable of detecting the excess of sulfur content limit in marine fuel of ships passing through the straits.
In the case of an appropriate signal on alledged violation of ECA rules, the Captain of Big Port St. Petersburg will order sampling of bunker fuel from the suspected ship. Mr. Volkov told the Forum that the port has been in talks now with the EU authorities on how to connect the Russian port to the THESIS-S.
